BlackBerry phones are usually standard and all of them share mostly the same design, so it is nice to see something different, something for users fond of flip phones. To get a better view and first sight of the phone, it measures 3.9 inches high by 1.9 inches wide by 0.7 inch deep and weighs 3.6 ounces, it fits in your pockets and you can use it comfortably in your hands.
When you flip the phone, you will observe it is quite tall, but it is a bit weird how the drop hinge is so obvious and it touches your face when you are engaged into a call. But in the end, you will appreciate the solid construction and the two versions of the phone: red and black. BlackBerry Pearl flip 8220 offers an external display of 1.6”, supporting 65.536 colors and having a pixel resolution of 128x160. It shows your basic data, time and date, battery status, signal strength, but also notifications when you receive a new message, when you missed a call, voice mails, caller ID and some other information as well. When you listen to music, you can see information regarding the track and you can adjust the volume. The flipping mechanism runs smooth, the hinge is sturdy and solid and again you will notice the strange construction (the front flat is behind the back cover), but there are some slight advantages to this construction. The steering controls and the keyboard is mostly the same as the original Blackberry Pearl.
Below the display screen you will find the Talk and End keys, the menu shortcut, trackball navigator and the Back button. And now for the SureType keyboard. There are two letters assigned to one key and when you start entering text, you will find displayed a list with possible combinations. The buttons and large and spacious, but some of the users are big fans and some just hate it. In fact it is up to you to decide, so you might give the phone a test before buying it. The internal display measures 2.25”, supports 65.536 colors and has a pixel resolution of 240x320. Everything displayed looks gorgeous, sharp and vivid and the icons on the interface just pop out to bright up the screen. You can make some customizations if you like, such as choose some background images, themes and change the font size and the backlighting time. On the sides of the phone you will find some controls. On the right side is the volume rocker, the microSD expansion slot and a shortcut key. On the left side you will find the mute button, the 3.5mm headphone jack, a convenience key and the micro USB port.
The phone runs on BlackBerry OS 4.6, giving a fresh look and a new interface with more modern-looking keys. As for the e-mail support, the phone stays as strong as always, which is typical for all BlackBerry phones actually.
